SHOKUBUTSU Calls Malaysian Women To Self-Check During Shower For Early Breast Cancer Detection

Shower time is the most convenient and easiest time to do breast self-check. Shokubutsu encourages all women to do self-check during shower for the sake of their loved ones via the Pledge-To-Self-Check During Shower campaign. National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) is the partner for this Pledge-To-Self-Check  During Shower. Early detection of breast cancer enhances survival rate.

Dear ladies, do you know that shower time can be life-saving? A simple breast self-check in the shower can help women detect breast cancer early and indeed the most convenient and easiest time to do a breast self-check. To encourage women to make this important commitment to carry out regular breast self-checks  during shower time, Shokubutsu, the leading shower foam brand in Malaysia, has spearheaded a pro-active campaign, Pledge-To-Self-Check During Shower.

Supported by campaign partner National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM), the initiative aims to empower women and highlight to them that early breast cancer detection lies in their hands and in turn, early detection can significantly increase the survival rate. This campaign is not only about encouraging women to pledge for their own wellbeing, but also for the sake of their loved ones as family members are deeply affected alongside the patient.

The Pledge-To-Self-Check During Shower campaign initiated by Shokubutsu is a response to the fact that breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world and knowing that early detection improves a patient’s rate of survival. The statistics alone are a motivating factor to encourage women to conduct breast self-checks in the shower.

Many women are aware of breast cancer but just how many of us have committed ourselves to do something about it? Theory is not practical and does not translate to any detection of this killer. Women lead such hectic lives that it is easy to find excuses and neglect their health. Shokubutsu understand this situation well and therefore believe that shower time is an ideal time for us to practice this good habit. No matter how hectic the life can be, a person will still spend the time to shower.

“Most of us leads a very busy lifestyle  whether at work, doing house chores, playing with the children and others. We seldom prioritise our own health. This can be due to time constraint or lack of suitable time to take a simple action that can be an early detection step. In addition, women often do not make this step a commitment especially when the requirement is perceived to be troublesome,” said Jackie Low, Marketing Manager, Personal Care Products Department, Southern Lion Sdn Bhd, the company behind the Shokubutsu brand.

“Since we shower everyday, Shokubutsu realised that shower time would be an ideal timing for us. Pledge-To-Self-Check During Shower is a campaign at educating women that they are doing their breast self-check cares not just for their own good but they are doing it because they care for their loved ones too”, she continued.

“I was diagnosed in the year 2004 with Stage 3 breast cancer. I have been through mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and I have been a survivor for 11 years now. Of course all the treatment helped me recover however, I could not have travelled this journey without the unconditional love, strength and support of my family members especially my sister Margaret Voon.” Ms Stella Voon was at the Pledge-To-Self-Check During Shower campaign launch to encourage women to pledge and be committed to their health.

Also at the launch was NCSM who shared on the latest statistics of breast cancer in Malaysia. NCSM President and Medical Director, Dr. Saunthari Somasundaram said, “More than 90% of women diagnosed with breast cancer at the earliest stage stand a chance of surviving the disease for at least 5 years. This is why we at NCSM stress upon the importance of prevention through early detection. So please do your breast self-checks every month, it is easy and will not take even 5 minutes of your time. The best time to do your breast checks is when you shower and this is something that all of us do on a daily basis. So make it a point to remember to do your breast self-checks once a month in the shower until it becomes an effortless habit.”

The Shokubutsu Pledge-To-Self-Check During Shower campaign will run from 1 October until 30 November 2015. Their target is to get 250,000 women to pledge to do their breast selfcheck during shower every month. Every bottle sold during the campaign period translates into 1 pledge where Shokubutsu will contribute RM0.10 to NCSM. Shokubutsu aims to raise RM25,000 through the 250,000 pledges.

To support this campaign, Shokubutsu will organise nationwide roadshows, in-store promotions and social media activation in educating women the step-by-step guide to do breast self-check during shower. Shokubutsu has also designed a special application on Shokubutsu Malaysia Facebook for women to upload and share their pledges with their friends and receive a Free 3D Mammogram with consultation voucher when they buy a Thin Prep (Pap Smear) at NCSM Cancer and Health Screening Clinic.

Shokubutsu wants women to also realise that breast self-check during shower is only one of the more helpful self-initiative step enable early detection and women especially aged 40 and above are encouraged to perform Mammogram scanning every 1-2 years as their risk of getting breast cancer is higher. For more information, you can log on to https://www.facebook.com/ShokubutsuMalaysia
