Hiroshima Prefecture is situated in
the south western part of Japan’s main island of Honshu with a total land area
of 8,479 km2 and a population of about 2.9 million people. The prefecture’s
geography is generally mountainous. The Western Chugoku Mountain Range is
comprised of a series of mountains at least 1,000 meters in elevation in the
northern part of the prefecture. In addition, clear river gorges, scenic new
growth in the spring, and the beautiful colors of fall spread over a vast area.
To the south, the prefecture borders the Seto Inland Sea, an area dotted with
countless islands both large and small creating a panorama of island beauty.
In December of 1996, Hiroshima City’s
Atomic Bomb Dome as well as Miyajima Island’s Itsukushima Shrine were registered as UNESCO World Heritage
sites. The Atomic Bomb Dome, the building directly over which the atomic bomb
exploded, has been accurately preserved since the aftermath of the explosion.
Itsukushima Shrine, constructed in the Heian Era Shinden-style, is an artistic
and technical masterpiece, appearing to floatupon the surface of the sea at
high tide. For more information please visit http://www.hiroshima-navi.or.jp/
